Brunstock Symm 261 battery energy storage cabinet, 125 kW 261 kWh

What is the Brunstock Symm 261?

The Brunstock Symm 261 is a 125 kW, 261 kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) built for commercial and industrial sites. It uses liquid-cooled LFP cells rated for around 8,000 cycles, operates from −30 °C to 55 °C, and parallels up to five cabinets for 625 kW / 1,305 kWh. Colterlec supplies, engineers and services it from Newcastle, NSW.

Grid-following for everyday tariff work. Grid-forming for islanded operation, with under 20 ms transfer and black start. The full spec sits in the technical table below, and the catalogue holds the complete documentation set.

Colterlec holds exclusive Australian and New Zealand distribution rights. The system is type tested by Brunstock as a complete unit, and the LFP cells come from three qualified tier-one suppliers, all tested to the same specification.

What the Brunstock Symm 261 does for a C&I electricity bill

Four jobs, one cabinet. Most sites run at least two of them at once.

01
Cut demand charges
Peak demand sets a large share of a C&I bill. The Symm discharges into your peaks so the meter sees a flatter profile. On the right tariff the demand saving alone can carry the system.
02
Shift solar into the evening
Midday export earns cents. Store it instead and use it at 6 pm when the tariff bites. Works with existing or new rooftop solar.
03
Ride through outages
Grid-forming mode with under 20 ms transfer keeps critical loads running through the switch. Black start energises a dead bus without an external supply.
04
Add load without a supply upgrade
EV chargers, new plant, a bigger compressor. The battery can carry the new peak so you avoid the network augmentation and the wait that comes with it.

Why the Symm 261 suits Australian site conditions

Long cycle life
Around 8,000 cycles at 0.5P and 95% DOD, one cycle a day. Predictable LFP fade.
Liquid-cooled cells
Holds pack temperature difference to 3 °C or less, and supports high power cycling without thermal derating.
Layered safety
LFP chemistry with level 3 fire protection: heat, smoke and combustible-gas detection, aerosol suppression and pressure relief.
Three-level BMS
BMU, BCMU and CCU architecture with fault isolation, overvoltage protection and thermal runaway linkage.
Modular scaling
One cabinet to ten under a single EMS: 1.25 MW and 2,610 kWh. One combiner box per five cabinets.
Factory integrated
Pre-assembled as a complete cabinet, so on-site work is civil, electrical and commissioning.

What Colterlec provides beyond the battery

Anyone can ship a cabinet. We size it against your interval data, commission it, and service it from Newcastle for the next decade. Colterlec is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 45001.

Stocked and spared here
Exclusive Australian and New Zealand distribution, with stock and spares held locally. No waiting on a container for a contactor.
Pre-installation audits
ROI modelling from your interval data before you spend anything. If it doesn’t stack up, we say so.
Design and integration
Protection coordination, switchboard integration and network application, done in-house.
Service from Newcastle
Our engineers commission on site, then handle preventative maintenance and support. ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

Common questions

On capacity and duration, yes. BESS5 needs usable capacity above 200 kWh, and usable is defined as 90% of nominal, so one Symm 261 counts as 235 kWh. It also needs usable capacity no more than six times inverter output; the Symm sits at 1.9 times, well inside it. The claim runs through an Accredited Certificate Provider, and we bring one in to handle it.
No, but it pays. A battery-only install earns certificates at 0.067 kW/kWh. Install new solar of at least a quarter of the usable battery capacity, and the battery within 90 days of it, and the coefficient lifts to 0.1 kW/kWh — about 50% more certificates. For one Symm 261 that is 59 kW of new solar. Existing solar does not count towards the ratio.
The count is deemed by formula, so it doesn’t depend on how the site performs. One cabinet on the Ausgrid network works out at about 14,700 PRCs battery-only, or about 21,900 with new solar inside 90 days: 235 kWh usable × 0.067 or 0.1 kW/kWh × firmness 1 × 6 hours × 15 years × 1.04 × 10. What varies is the price an ACP gets for them on the day. The estimator above runs the same maths for your configuration.
It varies with site works, switchboard capacity and protection requirements, which is why we quote from your interval data rather than publishing a flat number. Ask for an assessment and you’ll get a real figure, with the BESS5 incentive shown as a line item. Prices are ex GST.
The cabinet is 1200 x 1400 x 2320 mm and weighs 3 tonnes or less. Brunstock specifies at least 1500 mm clear in front, 1000 mm to any side or rear wall, and 1000 mm above. It goes in an outdoor hardened area or a dedicated indoor electrical room, not in an occupied space, and it must be clear of explosive gases and highly corrosive atmospheres.
Yes. The Symm 261 has a grid-forming mode with under 20 ms transfer, which Brunstock rates as UPS-level backup for critical loads. It can also black-start a dead bus without external supply. How long it holds a site up depends on your load profile, which the site assessment covers.
The cabinet arrives pre-assembled from the factory, so on-site work is mostly civil and electrical: slab, cabling, protection and commissioning. Brunstock requires installation and commissioning by qualified electrical contractors or Brunstock-trained technicians. For BESS5 the Rule requires a suitably licensed person and all planning and network approvals in place. Timelines depend on the site; we scope this during the pre-installation audit.
A 10-year performance warranty on the batteries and a 3-year defect liability period on the balance of system. Colterlec holds exclusive Australian and New Zealand distribution rights, so support, spares and stock sit here rather than offshore. We commission, maintain and service from Newcastle, and we’re certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 45001. Full warranty documentation is available on request.
Up to ten cabinets under one EMS, which is 1.25 MW and 2,610 kWh. Brunstock specifies one AC combiner box per five cabinets, so a ten-unit system uses two. One cabinet runs as the main unit and the rest as slaves. Talk to our engineering team about layout and spacing before you commit to a footprint.
Lithium iron phosphate, 314 Ah, in a 1P260S string. Brunstock qualifies cells from three tier-one suppliers, all type tested to the same specification, which is how battery supply chains work now. The complete system is type tested by Brunstock, not just the cells.
